National Institutes of Health found that the drug — known by the brand name esomeprazole, or just Nexium — is equally effective for treating the symptoms of chronic heartburn, a condition in which the heartburn is painful and lasts longer than the symptoms that cause the heartburn to heal. The study found that one single daily dose of Nexium is equally effective in preventing the painful conditions that cause the most ulcers.
The results, published in the New England Journal of Medicine in April, are based on a study of over 60,000 men with heartburn and a history of chronic heartburn that is not caused by the disease itself.
